Limekiln Wood

The woodland floor here is thick with leaf litter and moss, the sort of place where you actually feel the Sussex Weald closing in around you. Limekiln Wood is a proper forest walk rather than a manicured trail - older trees tower overhead, light filters through in patches, and there's genuine quiet if you time it right.

What's on offer is straightforward: woodland paths that meander through mixed forest, plenty of shade, and the kind of stillness that makes you remember why people bother with walks. The name hints at the industrial past - there were lime kilns here centuries back - but you won't find much obvious evidence now. It's the trees and the atmosphere that matter.

This works well for anyone who wants a proper country walk without the faffing about of marked trails and interpretation boards. Families with kids old enough to manage uneven ground will get on fine; toddlers might find the muddy patches tricky. History enthusiasts will appreciate the old industrial bones of the place, even if they're not shouting about it. Allow an hour or so, longer if you're the type to sit on logs and listen.

Close enough to Haywards Heath for a morning visit, and with Wild Boar Wood and Hook Farm campsites just down the road, you could easily tack this onto a wider Sussex park holiday. Both campsites rate highly, so you've got solid bases for exploring the area. The woodland's free, naturally - just turn up and walk in.
