About Lindow Common (SSSI & LNR)
Walkers will get the most from this one. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards - just you, the landscape, and hopefully some winter berries or heather in bloom depending on when you visit. The terrain is soft underfoot in places, squelchy in others. Bring decent boots and watch your step near the wettest bits. You can cover the main areas in an hour or so, though lingering types could happily spend twice that just taking in the space.
It's free to access, which is always welcome. The reserve sits nicely within a broader Cheshire walking circuit - Sycamore Farm Caravan Site a short drive away makes a decent base if you're planning a few days of moorland and countryside exploring in the area. Morning visits tend to be quieter, and the light can be quite something before noon.
Historically interesting too - Lindow Man was discovered here back in 1984, a perfectly preserved Iron Age body found in the bog. That alone makes it worth a visit if you're fascinated by archaeology, though you won't see the body itself at the site. The exhibition's in Manchester Museum.
