Lippen Wood

Walking into Lippen Wood feels like stepping back about fifty years. The trees are old, proper old, and they create these tunnels of green that block out most of the sky. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong instead of just assuming it's there.

The wood sits between Alresford and the rolling Hampshire countryside, making it an easy detour if you're based at Hampshire Hills caravan park down the road. The paths wind through mixed woodland - beech, oak, and everything in between - and they're well-maintained without feeling manicured. You'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right, and the autumn colours here are genuinely worth a stop rather than a drive-by.

It's best for walkers who want something gentle rather than a proper hike. An hour or so is enough to feel like you've actually been somewhere, though there's enough variation in the paths that you could easily stretch it to ninety minutes if you're in no rush. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main tracks, though pushchairs would be a struggle in places.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I could spot, so bring water and don't expect a cafe. The lack of infrastructure is precisely why it's worth visiting - Lippen Wood hasn't been turned into a destination. It's simply a proper bit of woodland where you can breathe and think. Free access as far as I could tell, though it pays to check before you go.
