Little Chishill Wood

A small but proper woodland sits just east of Royston, offering the kind of quiet walk you don't have to travel far to find. Little Chishill Wood is exactly what it says on the tin - intimate, unremarkable by grand standards, but genuine.

The paths wind through mixed woodland with the feel of a local haunt rather than a destination you'll read about in glossy magazines. There's something honest about that. You get native trees, decent shade, and enough space to actually hear yourself think. In spring the bluebells do their thing, and come autumn the light filters through properly golden.

This works best for people who want a straightforward woodland walk without the crowds or the car park theatre of bigger nature reserves. Families with younger kids will manage it easily enough - nothing too demanding, nowhere you'll get hopelessly lost. Dog walkers, locals clearing their heads on a lunch break, someone wanting to sketch among the trees - all of these make sense here.

If you're camping at Pightle Farm Campsite just down the road, this is exactly the sort of place to stretch your legs after breakfast without needing to drive anywhere. Allow an hour for a proper potter about, less if you're just after a quick loop. There's no visitor centre or café, so bring what you need.

It's not spectacular, and it doesn't pretend to be. That's rather the point.
