Little Richorn Motte

A grassy mound in the Dumfries and Galloway countryside might not sound thrilling, but Little Richorn Motte is one of those places that rewards curiosity. This is a genuine medieval motte - the earthwork remnant of a Norman defensive structure, probably raised sometime in the 12th or 13th century. What you're looking at is the flattened summit of what would once have been a proper fortification, likely with wooden palisades ringing the top.

It's accessible from near Dalbeattie, sitting quietly in farmland where you'd expect to see nothing more dramatic than sheep. The mound itself is modest in height but the views across the rolling Lowlands are genuinely pleasant. You can walk around it in fifteen minutes flat, though if you're the type who likes to stand and imagine what life was like for a Norman garrison in medieval Scotland, you might linger longer.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this - it's not a place for young children expecting ruins or interactive displays. There's nothing to touch, nowhere to climb safely, and no visitor facilities. What you need is an understanding of how these early medieval strongholds worked and a willingness to use your imagination.

The site is free and accessible year-round, though it's best visited when the grass isn't waterlogged. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Gorsebank or Kippford View, it makes a decent short morning walk before heading elsewhere. On its own it's not a reason to book a holiday, but paired with the coastal walks around Kippford or other local attractions, it slots in nicely.
