Little Valley Brewery

The brewery sits just outside Hebden Bridge, that proper arts hub in the Pennines, and it's run with real passion by folks who actually know their beer. Walking in, you're straight into the working brewery - you can see the kit, smell the malt, watch what goes into making the stuff. They do tours if you book ahead, which is worth doing because the team talk you through the whole process without being patronising about it.

Their core range includes some solid ales - the Hebden's Bitter goes down nicely, and the Withens IPA has real character without trying too hard. The taproom itself is no-frills, which you either love or find a bit sparse depending on your mood. Food's limited (crisps, that sort of thing), so don't expect lunch.

It's the kind of place that appeals to proper ale drinkers and anyone curious about how the thing's actually made, rather than families wanting a casual afternoon out. Kids can tag along on tours, technically, but they'll be bored after five minutes. Allow ninety minutes if you're doing a tour, forty minutes if you're just popping in for a pint.

Stay at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - just 1.7 miles away and highly rated - then combine the brewery with a walk along the Calderdale Way or a nose round Hebden Bridge's galleries and independent shops. Old Chamber Camping's also close at 2.9 miles if you prefer somewhere quieter.
