Little Walsingham Cross

The cross itself is rather modest - a simple stone marker that's easy to miss if you're not paying attention. But that's rather the point of Little Walsingham Cross. It's a nature reserve that rewards the kind of wandering most people don't do anymore, the sort of ambling that means you actually notice what's growing around you.

Located near Fakenham, this is proper Norfolk countryside - open fields, woodland edges, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how much noise you carry about with you normally. The walking is gentle, nothing that'll leave you knackered, and the paths wind through habitat that's been carefully managed for wildlife. Birdwatchers will spend hours here. Photographers too, if the light's cooperating.

It's not a day-long affair, mind you. Two hours maximum unless you're genuinely into spotting every species of plant within a five-mile radius. But that suits the place. It feels wrong to rush it, and it works brilliantly as a half-morning outing before heading back to your caravan at one of the nearby parks - Pinewoods Holiday Park and North Norfolk Glamping are both within easy reach.

Families with young children might find it a bit sedate. Older walkers and nature enthusiasts will find it exactly their speed. Free to access, which is refreshing. The real joy here is that nothing's been overdeveloped or signposted to death. It's still possible to feel like you've found something yourself.
