Littleton Hill

The walk up Littleton Hill from Yeovil takes about forty minutes if you're not dawdling, and the Somerset countryside spreads out beneath you in all directions once you've crested it. It's not dramatic - no Alpine moment here - but on a clear day you get proper views across the levels towards the Quantocks, which is exactly what you want from a modest peak in the West Country.

This is walker territory rather than tourist attraction land. The hill itself is quiet, rarely crowded, and the surrounding paths give you plenty of options to extend the outing if you're staying at Long Hazel Park or Hadspen Glamping nearby. Families with kids who are past the pushchair stage will find it manageable; under-tens might struggle with the pace unless they're keen.

There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no facilities to speak of - bring water and snacks. The approach from Yeovil is straightforward enough, though you'll want proper walking shoes if there's been rain. Allow two to three hours for a return trip if you're not hurrying.

It works well as part of a longer walking holiday. The Somerset countryside around here has good bones - not the most spectacular corner of the region, but solid walking country with enough woodland and open ground to keep things interesting. Come spring or early autumn when the light's generous and the crowds are elsewhere.
