Llanfairpwll Toll House

Standing beside the old A5 road into Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, this Victorian toll house reminds you just how recent free travel really is. The small stone building once collected fees from travellers crossing into Anglesey, back when Thomas Telford's road improvements were still paying for themselves through tolls.

It's a quick roadside stop rather than a destination in itself. The toll house sits unoccupied now, though the structure remains intact with its distinctive slate roof and sturdy Welsh stone walls. History enthusiasts will appreciate seeing this remnant of 19th-century transport infrastructure, but don't expect guided tours or interpretation boards.

Families staying at nearby Podiau Môn or Plas Coch holiday parks might combine a visit with the famous railway station sign hunt - Llanfairpwllgwyngyll station is just down the road with its ridiculously long name. Kids will find the toll house itself less thrilling than the story of having to pay to use roads.

The location works well as part of an Anglesey touring day rather than a standalone attraction. You can park briefly on the roadside, snap a photo, and move on to Beaumaris or the Menai bridges within minutes. It's free to view from the outside, which is about all there is to see anyway. Worth a five-minute pause if you're passing, but hardly worth a special detour from your Anglesey base.
