Marquis of Anglesey Column

Standing 91 feet tall on a hilltop near Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, this stone column commemorates the first Marquis of Anglesey, who lost his leg at the Battle of Waterloo. The monument itself is impressive enough, but the real draw is the climb to the top - assuming you can get inside when it's open, which seems to be a bit hit and miss.

History buffs will appreciate the significance: Henry Paget was Wellington's cavalry commander and famously remarked "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!" when a cannonball took it off. Wellington allegedly replied "By God, sir, so you have!" - though whether this exchange actually happened is anyone's guess.

The views from the summit are properly spectacular on a clear day, taking in the Menai Strait and Snowdonia beyond. It's a decent walk up from the car park, so factor in about an hour if you're doing it properly. Kids might find the military history interesting, though the climb could test shorter legs.
