Llowes Castle Tump

All that's left of Llowes Castle is a grass-covered mound rising abruptly from the Powys countryside near Hereford. It's the kind of place you'll walk past without realising what you're looking at unless you know the story - a Norman fortification reduced to earthworks, its wooden palisade long rotted away, its stones plundered centuries ago.

The tump itself is worth scrambling up if you're in the area. From the top, you get a decent view across the Wye Valley, and standing there you can almost imagine the motte-and-bailey layout: the raised platform where a timber tower once stood, the ditch that would have made it properly defensible. It takes five minutes, maybe ten if you're being thorough.

History buffs will find it interesting - this is the real thing, not a reconstructed prettified version. Families with young children might enjoy the scramble, though there's not much to do once you're up there beyond a look around. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks around Hay-on-Wye, it's an easy walk to slot in during a wider exploration of the area. Don't come expecting fortifications or visitor facilities. This is raw medieval archaeology, free and accessible, sitting quietly in its field waiting for people who actually want to engage with what they're seeing.
