Llyn Bloeddia

About ten minutes' walk from Holyhead's main roads, this small mountain lake sits in a natural hollow surrounded by rough moorland and low hills. The water is dark and still, reflecting the sky on calm days, though don't expect anything dramatic - it's more functional than beautiful.

Walkers heading across Anglesey's interior will appreciate the break, and there's something satisfying about finding water in what feels like the middle of nowhere. The path isn't marked particularly well, so you'll need decent navigation skills or a good map. Families with young children might struggle with the uneven terrain.

Fishing enthusiasts reckon the lake holds brown trout, though I can't vouch for the quality. The shoreline is boggy in places, so proper walking boots are essential. On a grey day it feels properly remote, which is either atmospheric or depressing depending on your mood.

Location-wise, you're well placed for several holiday parks around Holyhead - Coastal Pods and Two Peas in a Pod are both within easy reach. It's not a destination in itself, more a pleasant discovery if you're exploring this part of Anglesey on foot. Allow an hour return from the nearest parking spot, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's decent and you've brought a flask.
