Tŷ Mawr Hut Circles (Northeast Group)

The Iron Age doesn't announce itself loudly on Anglesey's northwestern coast. What you're looking at when you find the Tŷ Mawr hut circles is the flattened, grass-covered remains of domestic roundhouses, their stone foundations still visible if you know where to look. The Northeast Group sits near Holyhead, and these aren't dramatic ruins - they're subtle, archaeological, the kind of site that rewards patience and imagination.

There are several circular depressions scattered across the site, each one representing a home from around 2,000 years ago. Walk around and you start to picture Iron Age life: families in these roundhouses, smoke rising from central hearths, the sea visible not far off. It's quiet, windswept, genuinely atmospheric if you're the type who finds appeal in that rather than in carved stonework or grand architecture.

History enthusiasts and archaeologists will get the most from this. Casual visitors might spend twenty minutes here before moving on. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no admission charge - you simply turn up and explore the hillside. That's rather refreshing, actually. Bring decent boots because the ground is uneven and can be boggy.

Combine it with the coastal walks around Holyhead itself, or head further into Anglesey's archaeology. It won't keep families with young children entertained for long, but it's free and different.
