Llyn y Parc

The lake sits quietly in the Conwy Valley, just a few miles south of Betws-y-Coed, and it's the sort of place you'll stumble upon rather than plan for. Llyn y Parc is a proper mountain lake - nothing vast, nothing dramatic, but genuinely peaceful. The water reflects whatever sky you get that day, and on a clear morning it's genuinely worth the detour.

You can walk the shoreline without difficulty, which makes it ideal for families with younger kids who tire easily. The path is well-trodden but not rammed with people. Walkers heading into the Conwy Valley hills often use it as a warming-up lap before tackling the higher ground. The surrounding woodland gives shelter if the Welsh weather turns, which it will.

I'd allow an hour minimum if you're just doing the lake itself - maybe two if you're combining it with a longer valley hike. The nearest proper base is Betws-y-Coed, where you'll find cafes and supplies, but if you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Snowdonia Glamping Holidays or Porth Eryri are both close enough for an easy morning walk - you can be there in minutes.

It's free to visit and there's no formal entrance or facilities to speak of. Go early if you can, before the day-trippers arrive. In winter the light's better for photos, though you'll need proper boots. The lake won't revolutionise your trip, but it's a genuine break from the busier attractions and absolutely worth an hour of your time.
