Llywelyn Monument

There's a modest stone monument standing on a hillside near Builth Wells that marks the spot where Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last independent Prince of Wales, was killed in 1282. It's not flashy - just a simple cairn with an inscription - but it marks one of those moments that genuinely changed the course of British history.

You won't spend hours here. Walk from the car park, reach the monument in about ten minutes, read the plaque, take in the views across the Irfon Valley, and you're done. Twenty minutes round trip, maybe half an hour if you're the contemplative type. It's the sort of place that works best if you're already in the area rather than planning a trip specifically around it.

The real draw is the setting. Standing there, you get a proper sense of the Welsh uplands - rolling hills, distant ridges, that particular light you get in Mid Wales. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's no visitor centre, no facilities, just the monument and the landscape.
