Loch an Sgòr Ghaothair

You won't find crowds at Loch an Sgòr Ghaothair. This remote Highland water sits tucked into the mountains near Drumnadrochit, well away from the Loch Ness tourist trail that dominates the area. It's a proper wild spot - the kind of place where you genuinely might have the shore to yourself, especially outside summer weekends.

The loch itself is small and intimate, ringed by steep hillsides that drop straight into the water. There's no visitor infrastructure here, no café or car park with a sign. You're essentially accessing a piece of untamed Highland landscape. Walkers get the most from it. The journey in matters more than the destination - you're moving through genuine wilderness, not ticking off a postcard.

It's free to visit, as these things tend to be up here. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're walking from Drumnadrochit direction; the terrain is rough and navigation requires decent map skills or GPS. Avoid bog season if you can. The water's too cold for swimming, and there's bugger all to do once you're there except sit, look, and breathe.
