Loch of Skene

The water here is properly still on a calm day, mirror-flat and reflecting the Aberdeenshire sky back at you in perfect clarity. Loch of Skene sits just outside Garlogie, and it's the sort of place you'll drive past on the A944 without realising what you're missing. The loch itself is a shallow freshwater lake, ringed by fields and low woodland, with a small car park and access point that makes it easy to get down to the water's edge without much fuss. There's a walking path that takes you round part of the shore - probably forty minutes to an hour depending on how many times you stop to watch for birdlife. It's genuinely good for that. Grebes, mallards, the occasional heron if you're quiet. The water's not dramatic or particularly wild, but that's rather the appeal. You get a sense of rural Aberdeenshire here - proper countryside without the crowds you'd find further north. Families with younger kids will manage the walk easily enough, though there's not much in the way of facilities, so bring what you need. It's free to visit, as far as anyone can tell, and there's no entrance gate to speak of. Best visited in the quieter months when birdwatchers aren't outnumbering everyone else. If you're staying at Hillhead Caravan Park or Deeside Holiday Park - both solid bases for the area - this makes a decent morning out. Not a full day's entertainment, but a proper restorative hour or two that feels genuinely Scottish without being touristy.
