Lochan Uaine

The water here is genuinely turquoise. Not the Instagram-filtered kind - actual turquoise, like someone's left food colouring in the loch. Lochan Uaine sits in Argyll, a small but properly striking freshwater lake that catches the light in a way most Scottish lochs don't, thanks to white sand on the bed and mineral content that makes the whole thing glow.

It's a straightforward walk from the car park near Oban, nothing punishing - more of a gentle forest wander than a proper hike. You'll get there in twenty minutes or so, and the main appeal is exactly what you'd expect: standing on the bank taking photos, maybe a paddle if you're mad enough (the water's cold), and a sit-down with a flask. There's something properly restorative about it, though I'll be honest - it's not vast. You can see the whole thing from most angles, so twenty minutes here is plenty unless you're the type who enjoys sitting in silence for hours.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - it works better as a stop-off on a bigger Argyll loop rather than a destination in itself. Walkers will appreciate the easy access and the light. History types can skip this one.

If you're staying at Loch View Luxury Pod or North Ledaig Caravan Park, it's practically on your doorstep. Even from Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site it's only a short drive. Go when the weather's decent - grey skies kill the whole turquoise effect entirely.
