The Upper Heyford locks are a proper slice of Oxford Canal engineering, and Allen's Lock is the real draw here. It's the sort of place that makes you stop and actually look at how Victorian canal infrastructure was built - there's something satisfying about watching the water levels work, or just standing there understanding how much effort went into moving goods around before railways took over.

You're looking at a straightforward lock mechanism beside the canal towpath, a couple of miles north of Banbury. The setting is rural, genuinely quiet, and the kind of spot where walkers actually outnumber the boats. The lock itself isn't dramatic - no grand sluice gates or thundering water - but it's got character, and the towpath either side is dead easy for a wander. Good for an hour's exploration, longer if you're the type to sit by the water with a book.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit understated unless they're already into canals. Walkers and history types will get more from it, especially if you're doing a longer section of the Oxford Canal towpath. The water's peaceful, the banks are well-maintained, and there's something about the engineering that rewards a close look.

It's free, open whenever you fancy it, and works brilliantly as a detour if you're staying at The Pig Place or Glebe Leisure - both within easy driving distance. The Banbury area has proper canal heritage if you're serious about it, and this lock fits neatly into a half-day's exploring without feeling like you've wasted the trip.
