Loddon Reserve

The Loddon Reserve sits quietly along the river valley between Marlow and Henley, a stretch of woodland and wetland that feels genuinely off the radar despite being barely ten minutes' drive from the coaching inns and riverside pubs of town. It's the sort of place where you'll actually see kingfishers if you're bothered to stand still for five minutes, and where the Thames Path walkers tend to bypass for the main towpath action. The reserve itself is modest - no grand visitor centre or car parks, just access to trails that wind through native woodland and along the water's edge. Birdwatchers get proper value here, especially in spring and autumn. Families with older kids who aren't after a theme park will find it therapeutic rather than thrilling; it's a solid two-hour walk at a lazy pace, the kind of place where you remember why you booked a holiday in the Marlow area in the first place. Admission appears to be free, which you'd hope for somewhere this small. The ground can be boggy after rain, so wellies aren't optional. If you're based at Swiss Farm or Henley Four Oaks - both highly-rated spots within easy striking distance - it's worth combining with a Marlow afternoon. Don't expect grand vistas or facilities. What you get is peace, some decent birdlife, and the reminder that the Thames valley works perfectly well without the crowds.
