Lodge Bushes

The woods around Lodge Bushes, just outside Berkhamsted, are proper walking country - dense, quiet, and the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of traffic. It's not a manicured visitor attraction with a car park and gift shop; it's simply a stretch of Buckinghamshire forest that rewards a proper ramble through the trees. The paths wind through beech and oak, and on a clear day you get decent views across the Chiltern ridgeline if you know where to look.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after half an hour, unless they're the type who enjoy spotting woodland creatures and identifying trees. History buffs could spend time thinking about what the Chilterns were like centuries ago, but there's nothing architectural or obviously ancient on show. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a proper circuit; no time pressure, just forest and your own pace.

Free to access. Timing matters - early morning is best when the light filters through properly and the place feels genuinely wild. Winter and early spring are decent too, fewer people about.

If you're camping at Norcott Campsite, just over a mile away, or one of the other sites dotted around the area, Lodge Bushes makes a solid morning walk before heading into Berkhamsted for lunch. It's the sort of addition to a park holiday that fills the gaps between organised activities without feeling like you're making extra effort.
