Lodge Wood

Deep woodland trails wind through this substantial forest block just outside Dalbeattie, offering proper Scottish lowland walking without the Highland crowds. Lodge Wood spreads across rolling terrain with a decent mix of Scots pine, oak and birch - nothing spectacular, but solid enough for families wanting a proper countryside ramble.

The paths here vary from easy strolls suitable for pushchairs to more challenging routes that'll get your heart rate up. Dog walkers particularly rate this spot, as there's plenty of space for four-legged friends to stretch their legs off the lead. Wildlife spotting can be rewarding if you're patient - red squirrels pop up fairly regularly, and the birdlife includes woodpeckers and the occasional buzzard overhead.

Access appears to be free, though parking details aren't entirely clear from the roadside. Allow a good two hours for a decent walk, longer if you're stopping for a proper woodland picnic. The forest works well as a day out from any of the holiday parks dotted around this part of Dumfries & Galloway - Sandyhills Bay and the Kippford sites are all within easy driving distance. Best visited on drier days when the paths aren't too muddy underfoot.
