Round Fell

Three hundred and seventy-five metres above sea level, this modest summit in the Galloway Hills delivers surprisingly rewarding views across the Solway Firth towards the Lake District. Round Fell earns its name from its gentle, rounded profile - a proper hill walker's peak rather than anything dramatic or challenging.

The ascent from Dalbeattie takes about an hour and a half, following well-defined paths through mixed woodland before opening onto moorland. It's perfectly manageable for families with older children, though the boggy sections near the top can be a bit squelchy after rain. Pack decent boots.

From the summit, the panorama stretches from the Cumbrian fells southward to the Isle of Man on clear days. The immediate countryside rolls away in gentle waves of green farmland and forest, with the silver thread of the River Urr winding towards the coast. It's not spectacular in the Lake District sense, but there's something deeply satisfying about the view.

Walkers staying at nearby holiday parks like Sandyhills Bay or Kippford will find this makes an excellent half-day expedition. Allow three to four hours return from Dalbeattie, including time to appreciate the summit views. The descent follows the same route, though there are longer circular options for those wanting to extend the walk through the surrounding Galloway Forest.
