Lodgehill Coppice

You'll find Lodgehill Coppice tucked away in the countryside around Shrewsbury - a proper bit of working woodland that feels genuinely removed from the usual holiday park circuit. It's the kind of place where you actually notice the difference between oak and birch, where the ground stays squelchy even days after rain, and where you're more likely to spot a nuthatch than another human.

This is ancient coppice woodland, managed the old way - trees cut and left to regrow from the stump, creating that dense, layered canopy that filters the light into a thousand shades of green. In spring it's carpeted with bluebells. In autumn it's properly atmospheric. There's no visitor centre or carved wooden signs; you come here to walk, to breathe differently, maybe to sit quietly on a fallen log.

Walkers will get the most from it. Families with young kids might find it a bit much unless they're the outdoor type - there's no playground, no paths, just woodland. History buffs should know that coppiced woodland is a living connection to medieval land management, which sounds dry until you're actually standing in it.

Staying at Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp just two miles away makes real sense - you could pop over early morning or dusk without faffing about with long drives. Mill Farm Holiday Park is also close enough for a proper morning wander before breakfast. Allow a couple of hours to actually experience it rather than rush through. Free, obviously. Go when it's damp - the wood smells better, and the light's softer.
