Long Spinney

A proper woodland walk rather than some manicured nature reserve, Long Spinney lives up to its name - it's narrow, densely wooded, and genuinely feels like you've stumbled away from the farmland that surrounds it. Near Rugby, this stretch of ancient forest offers the kind of quiet you don't find often in the Midlands. The canopy is thick enough that even on bright days it feels shadowed and cool, with leaf litter underfoot and the occasional surprise of bluebells if you time it right in spring.

Walkers will get the most out of this one. It's not a destination with facilities or interpretive signs - you're here for the walk itself, the birdsong, maybe spotting a fox if you're lucky and quiet. An hour is plenty unless you're genuinely keen on forest ecology. It's exactly the sort of place to blow off steam between busier attractions, or to start the day before the sun gets too high and the woodland feels stuffy.

If you're based at Rosemarie Caravan Site just down the road, this is a natural morning sortie - close enough that you won't waste half your day driving, far enough into the trees that you'll feel properly away from the caravan park hubbub. Don't expect signage or a car park with a café. Bring proper shoes - it gets boggy in places - and expect to navigate by instinct as much as anything else.
