Home to the sport that conquered the world, this Warwickshire market town wears its rugby heritage with quiet pride rather than brash celebration. The famous William Webb Ellis Statue stands where legend claims the schoolboy picked up a football and ran with it in 1823, inventing the game we know today. But Rugby is far more than its sporting legacy.

The Webb Ellis Museum does a proper job telling the story, while the town centre itself has that comfortable market town feel - not flashy, but genuine. St John the Baptist church anchors the old quarter, and there's enough independent shops and cafes to keep you busy for an afternoon. The surrounding countryside is classic Warwickshire - rolling farmland dotted with spinneys like Cawston Spinney, perfect for walking off a pub lunch.

Bitteswell Airfield, a short drive out, offers a glimpse into wartime history. Meanwhile, Lime Farm Marina on the Oxford Canal provides peaceful waterside walks where narrowboats chug past at a leisurely pace.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Rugby sits bang on the M6 and has excellent rail connections to London and Birmingham. It's also brilliantly positioned for exploring the Heart of England - Warwick Castle is twenty minutes south, while the Cotswolds start just beyond the county boundary.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into town for dinner or a pint, yet surrounded by proper countryside. Stanford Hall's grounds are particularly lovely, and several parks offer fishing if you fancy trying your luck.
