Longdon Plantation

The forest floor at Longdon Plantation is thick with years of fallen needles, the kind that muffle your footsteps and make the whole place feel properly quiet. It's a working forest near Tiverton - mixed conifers mostly, with enough of a network of paths to keep you occupied for a solid couple of hours without feeling like you're walking in circles.

This isn't a show-stopping destination in itself. You won't find visitor centres, sculptures, or the kind of manicured trails you get at more famous Devon spots. What you get is genuine woodland, the sort where you might spot deer if you're quiet enough, and where the light filters through in that particular way that makes you remember why you came to the West Country in the first place.

It suits walkers more than families with small children - the paths are decent but not paved, and there's not much to stop and gawp at every five minutes. Bring proper boots if it's been wet. The best time is honestly autumn or early spring, when the light's low and the crowds elsewhere are manageable.

If you're staying at Nirvana Glamping nearby, it's a natural morning walk before heading back for coffee. On its own as a destination, I'd pair it with other walks in the area rather than drive to it specially. But for a quiet hour among actual trees, not Instagram-ready scenery, it does the job.
