Longrun Meadow

The meadows around Taunton aren't particularly famous, which is precisely why Longrun Meadow works so well as a proper break from the caravan sites dotted nearby. It's a nature reserve where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shop, no ticket barrier, just grassland and whatever wildlife decides to show up that morning.

What you get here is straightforward: walking routes through open fields with the kind of views that don't demand much effort to earn them. It's the sort of place where families with younger children won't spend hours, but that's honest feedback rather than criticism. An hour's amble, maybe ninety minutes if you're serious about spotting birds or sketching plants, and you're done. Walkers heading out from the nearby caravan parks - Cornish Farm Touring Park is barely two miles away - often pop in between longer circuits of the countryside.

The timing matters. Spring brings migrants, autumn gives you something to watch in the trees, and summer is just warm and green. Winter's quieter but the paths don't get impossible.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the surrounding sites like Ashe Farm or Holly Bush, this is decent for filling a morning without the rigmarole of planning an expedition. Not a headline attraction, but genuine downtime in actual countryside. Go if you're walking, not if you need interpretation boards and facilities.
