Lopwell Dam

The dam itself is modest - a Victorian-era structure that curves across the River Tavy near Tavistock, built to generate power for local mills back when that actually mattered. What strikes you isn't the engineering so much as the setting. Water pooling behind it creates a genuinely calm spot, the kind of place where you can stand and watch the light shift across the surface without much urgency.

You can walk right across the top, which takes about ten minutes and rewards you with views upstream towards Dartmoor's edge. The real value here is as a breather during a longer riverside walk rather than a destination in itself. History enthusiasts might appreciate the industrial heritage angle, but don't expect plaques or interpretation boards.

It's free and always accessible - there's no gate or visitor centre. Time it for late afternoon when Tavistock's teashops start winding down and the late sun catches the water properly. This works well as part of a Tavy Valley circuit, easily combined with walks to Buckland Abbey or further down towards the moorland.

Families with restless kids might find twenty minutes enough before they're ready to move on. Walkers and photographers will linger longer, particularly if you're cycling the Tavy Valley Trail. If you're staying at Dartmoor Domes a few miles north, it's a straightforward detour on the way back from the moor - convenient rather than essential, but worth stopping for on a decent day.
