Lough Cowey

The water at Lough Cowey is deceptively still, reflecting whatever sky decides to show up on the day you visit. It's a modest lake just outside Downpatrick, the kind of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it, which is rather the point. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no car park with a gift shop - it's simply water, reeds, and whatever birds fancy stopping by. Walkers love it because the circuit is manageable without being trivial, and there's a genuine sense of being somewhere proper rather than somewhere dressed up for tourists. You won't spend more than an hour here unless you're serious about your birdwatching or photography, but that's fine. It slots nicely into a caravan holiday in the area - Delamont Country Park is five miles away and offers more facilities if you need them, while Castle Ward and Silverbay are also within easy reach. The Mourne Mountains dominate the view south, which helps anchor the place in a landscape that's genuinely worth exploring. Best visited in autumn or winter when the light's low and the place feels properly isolated, though spring brings decent birdsong. It's free, obviously, and parking appears to be informal. Not the sort of attraction you plan a day around, but absolutely the sort you're pleased you found when you're taking a quieter walk from wherever you're staying.
