Loughareema

The lake simply vanishes. That's the thing about Loughareema - it's a proper geological oddity that locals near Ballycastle have been scratching their heads over for centuries. Most of the year it's a decent-sized freshwater lake in County Antrim, but come dry spells, the whole thing drains away through underground limestone channels, leaving just a muddy basin behind.

What you'll actually see depends entirely on when you visit. In winter and after heavy rain, it's a fine stretch of water surrounded by moorland - peaceful, a bit bleak in that way northern Irish landscapes can be. Show up in summer during a dry patch and you've got something genuinely unusual to photograph and puzzle over. The locals have names for it: sometimes they call it the lake that runs away from home.

Historically minded visitors will find the mystery genuinely interesting - there's proper scientific reason behind it, not just folklore. Walkers get a decent loop around it when there's water to see, though it's not dramatic terrain. Families might find it more diverting as a oddity stop than a destination in itself - kids will either be fascinated by the vanishing act or bored within twenty minutes depending on their age.
