Loverswalk Wood

The woodland paths here are proper lovely - mostly flat and well-trodden, which makes them accessible without being boring. You're wandering through mature beech and oak, the kind of forest that feels properly separated from the world even though Canterbury is just down the road. It's the sort of place where you'll actually see woodland birds and maybe spot a muntjac deer if you're lucky and quiet enough.

Who gets the most from it? Families with younger kids will crack on nicely for an hour or so - it's not so vast that anyone gets lost, and there's enough to notice without requiring a degree in forestry. Dog walkers absolutely love it. Serious hikers might find it a touch tame compared to the North Downs proper, but it makes a decent leg-stretch between other activities.

There's no entrance fee or booking needed - just turn up and walk. Allow between 45 minutes and two hours depending on how many wrong turns you take and how often you stop to listen to the wood pigeons. Early morning or late afternoon visits tend to be quieter, though honestly it never gets rammed.

It works well as a break from the touristy bits of Canterbury itself. If you're based at one of the local camping spots - Turners Folly Field is barely two miles away - you can pop in for a morning wander before heading into the cathedral city for lunch. The campsites around Sandwich (three to five miles out) are equally well-positioned if you want woodland time mixed with beach time on the Kent coast.
