Low Guards Wood

Walk into Low Guards Wood and you're straight into proper woodland - tall conifers mixed with broadleaves, the forest floor thick with needles and moss. It's the kind of place where the light filters green through the canopy and you can actually hear yourself think, which says something given how close it is to Stocksfield.

There's no visitor centre or café, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on your mood. You simply turn up and walk. The woodland isn't vast - you can work through it in an afternoon without rushing - but it's dense enough that you'll feel genuinely removed from anywhere. Dog walkers absolutely love it, and families with decent-aged kids (say, seven and up) will manage fine on the obvious paths. Younger ones might find the uneven ground and roots a bit much.

Go when the weather's dry. After rain the forest floor gets properly boggy and you'll be squelching back to the car with muddy knees. Spring is exceptional - bluebells and wood anemones carpet the floor if you're there at the right time.

If you're staying at Valley View Camping or Hidden Retreat Glamping nearby, this makes a solid morning or early afternoon outing before heading back to sort food. It's not a destination on its own - don't make a day of it - but as part of a wider walking week in Durham, it absolutely earns its place. The woodland has real character without feeling curated or overcrowded.
