Lower Bitterns Wood

The woodland track winds through Lower Bitterns Wood just outside Crewe, and it's the sort of place that reveals itself slowly as you walk deeper in. Ancient oaks tower overhead, their branches creating a proper canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, and you'll spot the odd stream running through if you know where to look.

This isn't a manicured country estate kind of woodland - it feels genuinely wild, which makes it appealing if you're after a bit of actual nature rather than a themed experience. Dog walkers get the most from it, honestly, but it's decent for a gentle family ramble too. Kids might lose interest after 40 minutes unless they're the type to spend hours turning over logs and examining bark, so bring something to occupy them if you're planning a longer stay.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with water and check the ground conditions after rain - it can get boggy. Best visited in autumn when the canopy colours up, or spring when the undergrowth isn't quite so thick and you can actually see what's around you.

It works well as a morning walk from Tipsy Tree Glamping, only a few miles away. You're close enough to Crewe for lunch stops but far enough that you genuinely feel removed from town. Worth a couple of hours if you're in the area, though I wouldn't plan a whole day around it.
