Lower Healey Wood

Lower Healey Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Leyland - the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident and think "why didn't I know about this sooner?" The forest floor is dense with ferns and bracken, especially in summer, and the canopy does a decent job of keeping things cool even when it's warm outside. You're looking at mixed woodland here, not some managed plantation, which means there's a genuine sense of being away from it all despite being close to town.

Walkers will find their time well spent. The paths wind through the trees without being overly complicated, and you can easily spend an hour or two wandering without committing to a major trek. Kids won't get bored - there's enough variation in the terrain and plenty of things to spot if they're into nature at all. The woodland canopy keeps things atmospheric, and the quietness is refreshing if you've just come from the busier parts of Lancashire.

It's free to access, no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Best visited outside peak summer weekends when families might have clogged up the paths. The walk suits all abilities reasonably well, though it's not flat - expect some gentle inclines that'll remind your legs they're working.
