Lower Linenwell Wood

The Forest of Dean sprawls across the border, but if you're after something quieter - without the crowds queuing for car parks - Lower Linenwell Wood delivers the goods. It's a proper old-growth woodland tucked into Monmouthshire, all towering oaks and dense canopy, the kind of place where light filters through in dusty shafts and you actually hear birdsong instead of other people's phone conversations.

You're walking through real woodland here, not a manicured trail. The paths are decent enough but it's genuinely wild - bring proper boots if it's been wet. Allow two to three hours to get a feel for it without rushing, though you can do a shorter loop in an hour if you've got limited time.

History types will appreciate the working woodland heritage; it's been managed for centuries. Families with older kids who don't need facilities will find plenty to explore - fallen logs, streams, the occasional bit of wildlife if you're quiet enough. Younger children might get restless without a specific destination point.

Lydney's the nearest town for supplies, about four miles south. If you're staying at Penhein Glamping locally, this makes an excellent afternoon escape - close enough not to feel like a mission, far enough away to feel properly removed from things. Free to access, no visitor centre or facilities on-site, so come prepared. Best visited in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, or autumn for the light.
