Lower Park Wood

Ancient oak and ash trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this proper working woodland just outside Hereford. Lower Park Wood feels delightfully untamed - fallen logs provide natural seating while moss-covered stones mark old boundaries that speak of centuries past. The canopy filters sunlight into dappled patterns that shift with every breeze.

Dog walkers will love the freedom here, and families with older children who don't mind muddy boots will find plenty to explore. Younger ones might get restless after half an hour unless they're keen on den-building and stick collecting. The paths aren't marked or maintained like a country park - this is woodland as nature intended.

Bring waterproofs whatever the forecast. Even on dry days, the undergrowth stays damp and the paths can be boggy after rain. Allow an hour for a gentle wander, longer if you're the type to peer under every log for beetles and fungi.

Staying at Poston Mill just down the road? This makes a lovely morning constitutional before the day gets going. The woodland works well as part of a longer walking route towards the River Wye, though you'll need an OS map to navigate confidently beyond the main tracks.
