Lower Plantation

A sprawling woodland just south of Hassocks, Lower Plantation is the sort of forest that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick in-and-out. Towering conifers and broadleaf trees create that satisfying quiet you get when the world's buffered by greenery. The paths are mostly straightforward - muddy when wet, which is often - and it's good for anyone who wants to stretch their legs without needing a detailed OS map.

Families with kids under ten might find it slightly repetitive after an hour or so - there's no playground or water features to break things up - but older children and serious walkers will appreciate the space. It's proper woodland walking: birds if you're lucky, the occasional runner, plenty of birdsong. The place has an undeniably peaceful quality that makes it worth the trip from Hassocks, though don't expect dramatic viewpoints or heritage features.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though exact opening hours aren't published - it's the kind of place you can slip into most times of day. Allow anything from 45 minutes for a short circuit to two hours if you're exploring properly. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent shoes are essential.

If you're camping at Wild Boar Wood or Blacklands Farm - both excellent bases within five miles - Lower Plantation fits neatly into a local day. Pair it with walks around Hassocks itself for a well-rounded few hours, but don't expect it to fill a full morning on its own unless you're genuinely into forestry.
