Lower Silk Wood

Ancient woodland near Malmesbury doesn't sound like much until you're actually walking beneath those towering beeches and oaks. Lower Silk Wood is proper old - the kind of place where you genuinely feel the weight of centuries underfoot. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, the canopy dense enough that even on bright days it feels properly atmospheric.

This is walker territory, pure and simple. The paths are decent but they demand respect - muddy in wet weather, root-strewn year-round. Allow two to three hours if you want to properly explore without rushing. Spring brings bluebells that justify the trip alone. Autumn's when I'd go though - the light through the changing leaves is something else.

It's free to access and there's genuine woodland feel here, not some manicured country estate. History buffs will appreciate that this landscape has barely changed in centuries. Families with younger kids might find it a bit relentless - there's not a lot of variation or obvious "sights" to aim for, just trees and more trees. Teenagers who actually like walking? They'll be fine.

If you're based at Burton Hill Caravan & Camping Park or the glamping at Whychurch Farm, both within easy reach of Malmesbury, Lower Silk Wood makes a proper morning walk before you hit the market town itself. It's not a destination in its own right, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy something genuine.
