Lye Wood

Lye Wood is a proper Sussex woodland gem just outside Chichester, the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's ancient forest - the kind with proper trees, dappled light, and enough peace and quiet to actually hear yourself think. You're walking through beech and oak, spotting the occasional woodland creature if you're lucky, with paths that fork and wind rather than march you straight through in twenty minutes flat.

The wood works best for anyone wanting a genuine forest walk without the crowds or the visitor centre nonsense. History buffs will find something to chew on - these woodlands have been here for centuries - but it's really about the walking, the air, the feeling of being properly away from it all. Families with kids who actually like nature rather than play parks will get hours out of it; those expecting facilities will be disappointed. There's no cafe, no car park to speak of, just woodland. Which is exactly the point.

If you're staying at Bow Hill Farm or Chichester Lakeside - both within easy striking distance - Lye Wood makes a cracking morning or afternoon detour. It slots perfectly into a Sussex break where you want to combine a bit of countryside walking with seaside or market town bits elsewhere. The ground can be muddy after rain, so proper boots are the way to go rather than trainers. Worth the trip from Chichester, though you'll need your own transport to get there.
