MacPherson Monument

The MacPherson Monument stands on a hillside near Newtonmore, a simple but striking granite obelisk that commands respect the moment you lay eyes on it. This is where the Clan MacPherson chief and his followers made their last stand during the 1746 uprising, and the monument marks that pivotal moment in Highland history.

It's not a sprawling visitor attraction with gift shops and cafes - it's just you, the stone, and the weight of what happened here. The walk up takes maybe ten minutes from the road, through rough moorland that feels proper wild. The views across the Spey Valley are worth the leg stretch alone, rolling hills and distant peaks that explain why people fought so hard for this land.

History types will find it deeply moving. Families with energetic kids will appreciate the short scramble and the open space to run about. Casual walkers passing through won't feel short-changed if they stop for twenty minutes. On a clear day it's absolutely worth the detour.

There's no admission fee, no facilities at the monument itself, so bring water and dress for Highland weather - it can turn in minutes. Spring and autumn offer the best light for photographs. If you're staying at Invernahavon Caravan Park just down the road, you're barely five minutes from here, making it an easy addition to a morning ramble.
