Maenporth Beach

The moment you crest the path down to Maenporth and the beach swings into view, you realise why locals keep this one quiet. It's a proper south-facing crescent backed by low cliffs and dense woodland, the kind of place where the water stays warmer than you'd expect and the crowds thin out fast once you venture beyond the car park.

This is a swimmer's beach first and foremost - the sand shelves gently and the water's clean enough that families with young kids actually stay put for the full day rather than giving up after an hour. There's a decent stretch of sand to claim, rock pools worth investigating at low tide, and enough golden cliffs to make it feel like somewhere proper rather than just another Cornish postcode.

You'll need a car to get here - there's a small car park right by the entrance, which fills up on peak summer days but rarely gets rammed. Aim for late morning or early afternoon if you want both space and decent light for photos. Bring a wetsuit unless you're visiting in August; the Atlantic doesn't do warm.

If you're basing yourself at Stay Wild or Trethem Mill, Maenporth makes an easy half-day trip from either site. It pairs well with the quieter beaches around Truro's river valleys - you can do a proper beach crawl without feeling like you're fighting the whole of England for sand. Free to access, no facilities to speak of, which means it stays refreshingly unspoilt.
