Magiovinum Roman Settlement

You won't find much standing here - that's rather the point. Magiovinum was a Roman fort near Dropshort, just outside Milton Keynes, and what remains is mostly earthworks and the faint outline of where soldiers once marched around two thousand years ago. The site itself is free to wander, though there's no visitor centre or fancy interpretation boards, just the landscape telling its own story if you know how to read it.

It's the kind of place that appeals to serious history types and walkers rather than families after an afternoon's entertainment. Give yourself an hour at most to poke around the defensive ditches and imagine the garrison life. You'll need a bit of archaeological imagination, frankly - this isn't Hadrian's Wall. The nearest proper facilities are in Milton Keynes itself, about four miles south.

What makes it worth the detour from a park holiday is the combination approach. Stop here after pitching at The Old Dairy Farm Camping (less than two miles away), then wander the surrounding Buckinghamshire countryside. The fort sits in decent walking country, and combining it with a proper ramble makes the visit feel less anticlimactic. Gullivers Campsite, three and a half miles south, also puts you within reasonable reach. Winter's actually the best time - the earthworks show up better without summer vegetation, and you'll have the place to yourself. Just check access locally before you go, as there's no official visitor setup here.
