Concrete roundabouts and gleaming shopping centres might grab headlines, but venture just outside Milton Keynes proper and you'll find a surprisingly green corner of Buckinghamshire that most people miss entirely. This slice of the county sits where ancient Roman roads once carried legions through rolling farmland - evidence of which you can still see at Magiovinum Roman Settlement.

Bletchley forms the historic heart of this area, its wartime connections proudly marked by the Bletchley War Memorial. The town feels properly lived-in rather than planned, with proper pubs and independent shops that have grown organically over decades. Just south, Woburn Sands offers a completely different vibe - more villagey, with the excellent Woburn Lido providing outdoor swimming when the weather's kind.

Stockgrove Country Park delivers proper countryside within minutes of the new town's edge. Lovely walking trails wind through ancient woodland, and the unusual Stockgrove Sundial makes for an interesting diversion. Further afield, the Polish Memorial stands as a moving reminder of the area's wartime aviation history.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Fenny Stratford and Bow Brickhill stations put you on the main London-Birmingham line, while the M1 runs right past if you're driving. The contrast between urban efficiency and rural tranquillity happens within a few miles, making this an oddly compelling base for exploring both worlds.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to nip into Milton Keynes for shopping or entertainment, yet far enough out to wake up to birdsong rather than traffic. Day trips to the Chilterns or even London become perfectly feasible, while evenings can be spent exploring country pubs that have served locals for centuries.
