Mainsforth Wood is proper woodland - the sort of place where you can actually lose yourself for an afternoon without bumping into ice cream vans or organised activities. It's a genuine forest walk just outside Durham, with good paths threading through mixed broadleaf and conifer, the kind of landscape that feels genuinely wild without requiring you to trek into the Lake District.

You're looking at roughly two to three hours pottering about, depending on how many wrong turns you take. The wood itself is unremarkable in the Instagram sense - no waterfall payoff, no summit view - but that's rather the point. Families with older kids will do well here; younger ones might find it a bit samey after forty minutes. Walkers, though, will appreciate the straightforward navigation and the fact you can actually breathe without dodging mountain bikers.

It's free and there's no formal gate to fret about. Bring proper boots if it's been wet - the paths can get sticky. Early morning visits are best if you want any sense of solitude, especially in summer when the school holidays pack out the region.

For a week's caravan base, it sits nicely between the Durham attractions and the countryside. Donnewell Farm Caravan Club is less than four miles away, and Eden Grange Glamping under six miles, both solid spots for families wanting day walks without the faffing about of a proper hiking trip. Mainsforth works as your quiet morning walk before heading into town for the cathedral.
