Parkhill Canine Paddock

The Parkhill Canine Paddock is a dedicated off-lead space for dogs just outside Durham - the sort of place that makes dog owners genuinely grateful it exists. It's a proper enclosed field where your dog can burn off energy without you spending the afternoon chasing them across open moorland.

What you get is straightforward: a safe, fenced area where dogs can run, play, and socialise with other dogs without the lead. There are usually a few benches scattered about, so you can actually sit down and watch rather than stand there like a lemon. It's the kind of facility that sounds simple because it is simple - but it's invaluable if you're touring with a pooch.

This works brilliantly for families with young dogs or anxious dogs that still need proper exercise but not in an uncontrolled environment. If your dog is elderly or not into the whole socialising thing, you'll find quieter times in the morning. School holidays can get rammed, mind you.

Staying at Grove Farm or Strawberry Hill Farm puts you within quick reach - both are under three miles away. The paddock is absolutely free, which is proper refreshing. Allow about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your dog's energy levels and how chatty the other owners are feeling.

It's not a destination in itself, but combined with walking around Durham's cathedral and riverside, or exploring the nearby parks, it slots nicely into a holiday where the dog's welfare actually matters. Very much a local's spot rather than a tourist draw.
