Maldon - Hydrogen Thames Barge

The Hydrogen Thames Barge sits in Maldon's working waterfront, and it's one of those places that makes you properly grateful we've kept something real from the past rather than turning it into a theme park. This is an actual working barge - a Hydrogen-class vessel - and you can board her to see what life was like for the barge workers who hauled cargo up and down the Thames for centuries.

What you get is a genuine sense of how cramped and basic it all was. The living quarters are small, the galley's barely fit to swing a cat in, and you realise quickly that these weren't pleasure boats. They worked. Hard. The museum tells the story through the vessel itself rather than endless panels, which is refreshing.

It's best for anyone with a genuine interest in Thames history or industrial heritage - walkers heading through Maldon will appreciate the waterfront atmosphere as much as the barge itself. Kids might find it a bit of a squeeze if they're the type who need constant entertainment, though hands-on learners often click with seeing the actual living spaces. Aim for a couple of hours maximum.

Maldon itself is a proper little market town with good independent shops and decent pubs, so you can build a proper half-day around it. If you're based at Mill Beach or Osea nearby, the barge is an easy detour.
