Maldon Promenade Zoo

The walk along Maldon's waterfront takes you past salt marshes and moored boats before you spot the zoo tucked behind the promenade. It's a small operation - nothing like Colchester Zoo down the road - but that's rather the point. The collection focuses on smaller animals: reptiles, birds, and mammals you won't find roaming free in Essex. Kids under eight get the most out of it; older children might work through it in an hour or so.

Admission costs a few quid, making it a decent half-day activity if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Mill Beach or Osea Leisure. The actual enclosures are tight quarters, so don't expect sprawling habitats. On a decent day, though, the location itself - right on the water with views across the Blackwater estuary - makes the visit feel less like a concrete zoo experience and more like a quirky seaside stop.

Go early or late to avoid school groups. Weekday visits are quieter. There's a small cafe on site, though it's nothing fancy. Combine it with a proper walk along the Maldon waterfront and a poke around the town's antique shops, and you've got a respectable afternoon. It won't win awards for animal welfare or spectacle, but for a wet Tuesday when the kids are restless, it does the job.
