Marley Wood

The woodland around Marley Wood near Maidstone is a proper tonic if you need to escape the Kent flatlands for an afternoon. Ancient oak and beech trees tower overhead, and in spring the forest floor erupts with bluebells - the kind of scene that actually justifies the camera roll. Walking here feels properly remote despite being barely outside town, which is the whole appeal.

There are decent walking paths threading through, ranging from gentle loops to longer rambles if you've got the legs for it. Families with younger kids will manage an hour or so before the novelty of trees wears thin, but serious woodland walkers could easily spend a half-day poking around. The air smells like damp soil and possibility, especially after rain.

If you're staying at Chegworth Mill Glamping just down the road, this is an obvious addition to your itinerary - close enough for a morning sortie before breakfast gets cold. The Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club site works equally well as a base. Both put you within striking distance of proper forest time without the faff of driving hours into the Weald.

Go when the light's low and sideways, either early morning or late afternoon. Midday through summer can feel a bit ordinary. Free to access, naturally, and no facilities to speak of - bring water and sensible shoes. It's not dramatic or particularly famous, but that's rather the point.
