Marsh Copse

The woodland around Marsh Copse is proper ancient stuff - the kind of forest that makes you realise Wiltshire isn't all chalk downs and stone circles. You get beech and oak mostly, with a decent network of paths that wind through without being too manicured or signposted to death. It's a genuine working woodland rather than a visitor attraction with facilities, which means you need to know what you're after before you arrive.

Walkers will appreciate the peace of it, especially if you're basing yourself in Malmesbury and want something green without the crowds. The paths are manageable rather than challenging, and it's a cracking spot for an hour or so of quiet rambling. Families with younger kids might find it a bit ordinary unless they're genuinely keen on tree-spotting - there's no playground nonsense or obvious "look at this" moment.

The reality is there's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. It's free to access, and you can easily slot it into a morning before heading back to town for lunch. The nearby glamping and caravan parks - Malmesbury Glamping at Whychurch Farm is barely half a mile away - make it a natural stop-off for anyone staying locally. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy a proper walk through actual woodland rather than a manicured park. In autumn it's worth timing right for the colour, but don't expect revelations.
